About Me

I'm a full-time web developer who specialises in building successful websites that help businesses in a variety of disciplines. I have been in the field for nearly 10 years, and worked on projects for Tesco, Carphone Warehouse, Cheviot Trust and Merlin Entertainments.

I use my commercial awareness to understand the specific needs of the project and come up with a plan that delivers outstanding work on time and within budget. I like making reliable software so I try to follow SOLID programming principles and use BDD where it makes sense to do so.

Most people would describe me as 'their technical friend' - I am a developer, sysadmin, copywriter, marketer, and overall problem solver.

I'm 33 years old, for 5 years of which I have been married to my darling wife Flavia. We have a son, Joshua. We live in sunny Leigh on Sea, where we go for regular walks on the beach. I'm rubbish at dancing.

Cheviot Trust

Symfony2, UI, Resque, PHPUnit

Following changes in legislation, this non-profit pensions organisation wanted their members to be able to compare outcomes based on changing variables like contributions, retirement ages and amount of lump sum taken. Since it was targeted at people who hadn't yet retired it was also necessary to estimate the size of the pot.

I designed the layout of both the form and the results page, built the backend of the calculator and implemented a queue system to ensure maximum uptime in case of traffic spikes.

Symfony2, nginx

A startup with only a very basic website and was just going international wanted a technical strategy to underpin their expansion.

I planned and built a new website with a custom CMS, allowing regional franchisees to promote themselves with their own content through a blog, event management system, and newsletter generator. I used Symfony2 with nginx (including edge side includes) and CloudFront to manage extreme traffic spikes cost effectively. I produced wireframes, wrote content, and worked with a junior developer and designer on the front end

Merlin Entertainments

Symfony2, Behat, PHPSpec

As one of the world’s largest theme park operators, Merlin work with Swan Creative for all their printed signage in restaurants across their international sites.

I built a workflow management system which allowed staff from both the agency and the client to view updated designs, giving feedback and approval through comments. Everything wrapped in Behat tests.

Magic Mushroom Restaurant

Symfony2, jQuery UI

This restaurant wanted to manage the menus on their website and also in print, whilst ensuring consistency in content and branding.

I delivered a bespoke CMS allowing them to manage menu content through a simple UI.

This leading retailer wanted to expand their email database, so I built the front and back end for 16 lead-generation campaigns, including a pairs game, a virtual fish tank and a 'clicks and mortar' promotion working with stores. All campaigns integrated with the Silverpop API using PHP, responsive designs with a focus on cross-browser compatibility.

Carphone Warehouse

PHP, landing pages, cross-browser compatibility
